“SOUNDINGS” – A SPIRITUAL ADVENTURE SET IN THE TELECOM BOOM DAYS OF DENVER IN THE MID-1990S
10/15/2007
Author William Charland Takes Readers on a Journey through the Personal and Professional Peaks and Valleys of Staying Relevant in an Ever Changing World
Public relations professional Hawk Kidree and his client, telecommunications giant Telwest engineer Wally Arneson, are caught in the maelstrom of a new product being raced to market. The video phone could set them squarely in the midst of an exploding mid-1990s telecom market – if the bugs are out.
“Soundings,” a new novel by former Denver careers columnist William Charland, probes the mysterious corporate forces involved with marketing a revolving round of cutting edge products, and the human cost of living in this kind of environment. The video phone could make or break careers, unite or divide long-held relationships, and even determine the future path of an industry giant. But where’s the market for the new invention? As a tool for members of a civic organization who are too busy to attend meetings? Or a device that could launch a huge new industry: video phone sex.
The story centers in the complex character of Hawk, a mixed-race Nanticoke Indian, as he leads us on a spiritual adventure through the backstreets and boardrooms of a city caught up in high-tech mania. Someone is rushing the video phone to market, and Hawk has to find out who it is as he tries to help his client, Wally, and Cassy, a beautiful young Nanticoke marketing intern, stay afloat in a wave of corporate greed.
Along the way, Hawk is forced to re-examine some of his traditional values as he tries to find his bearings in a constantly changing economic landscape. Will love prevail over corporate greed, moral bankruptcy, and illegal activity associated with increasing Telwest’s market share in a highly-charged, high-stakes, competitive telecom world?
Through “Soundings,” Charland takes us on a corporate roller coaster ride while providing a probe into the unique lives and personalities of the myriad characters responsible for delivering bottom line results.
“Soundings” effectively blends themes from current, real-life business affairs and headline legal events with a story line that will appeal to readers with a broad range of interests. From those with an interest in the world of high tech and telecom to those who simply enjoy a riveting adventure and mystery story, “Soundings” strikes a chord.
