April 1998 - Voices of Resistance
Oral Histories of Moroccan Women

by Alison Baker

These amazingly frank and courageous Islamic women are storytellers who lived through stirring times. Their active struggle against French colonialism challenged and redefined traditional Moroccan ideas about women's roles in society.

Along with their stories, VOICES OF RESISTANCE presents an introduction to each women in terms of her family background and personal style. Allusions to Moroccan history and popular culture, including contemporary songs and poems, give readers a vivid sense of what their lives were like and are like today.

Their lives illuminate issues such as feminism and nationalism in Third World countries, women in an Islamic society, and women's roles in social change.

Early readers call VOICES OF RESISTANCE "insightful," "engaging" and "must reading."

"Captures the tension between tradition and modernist yearnings for freedom and autonomy in both personal and public life."
-- Ronald J. Grele, Director, Oral History Research Office, Columbia University

"A very demanding and meticulous work [that is] a unique and valuable document on a history twice condemned to omission: because it is oral and because it is women's."
-- Leila Abouzeid, author, Year of the Elephant

"Baker is an excellent guide to her subjects. Her comments throughout are important and insightful."
-- William A. Hoisington, Jr., Department of History, University of Illinois at Chicago

"Must reading for students of women's contribution to politics and change in Muslim societies...Unforgettable narratives of courage and perseverance...[that have] immediacy, spontaneity and openness."
-- Mahnaz Afkhami, Director, Sisterhood is Global Institute, author of Women in Exile

"The women's oral histories are engaging and give a sense of the distinct personal styles and personalities of the individual Moroccan activist women."
-- Marcia K. Hermansen, San Diego State University
